Hitching Others
(Hitch)

Societies beliefs on love are portrayed in many different ways in movies and books. Two movies that portray societies beliefs pretty equally are the play “The taming of the shrew” written by William Shakespeare and the movie “Hitch” starring Will Smith. In the play "Shrew" Traino was helping Lucentio to get the girl of his dreams. In the movie "Hitch" there is the same concept because a man named Albert Brennaman who was a rich man trying to get with the girl of his dreams, got help from Alex "Hitch" Hitchens who specialized in helping men to get women. There are many characters that compare with each other from both texts. Two of them that compare are Alex “Hitch” Hitchens and Traino. Also another two that compare are Albert Brennaman and Lucentio. Both of these texts portray the belief of society that in order to get into a good relationship men have to deceive to make a relationship work.

"Quote from Play"

(Act 1, Scene 1, 195-215)

"Tranio: You will be the schoolmaster And undertake the teaching of the maid: That's your device"

In this quote Tranio is talking to Lucentio about a plan to get Bianca the girl that Lucentio really wants to marry. Basically what Tranio wants Lucentio to do is pose as a schoolmaster that Bianca's father has hired to teach Bianca while she is home. Which is a perfect idea because no one has yet seen Lucentio which means that no one knows who he is. Now this quote is one of the best portrayal of how Lucentio is going to lie to Bianca. It also shows that in order for Lucentio to have Bianca's hand in marriage he must first lie his way into the relationship. Just like the play the movie portrays the same idea.

This still from the movie is showing when Albert Brennamen first starts to date the girl of his dreams Allegra Cole. What Allegra does not know is that on the other side of the door a man is actually guiding Albert through the whole thing. She thinks that Albert is doing all the talking himself. Alex never lets Allegra know about Alex "Hitch" Hitchens is on the other side of the door. Thus, reinforcing how the movie portrays their take on societies beliefs. Which they believe to be that deception is key in relationships.

"Quote from Play"

(Act 5, Scene 1, 125-137)

"Why, Tell me, is not this my Cambio...goodwill?" In this quote Lucentio reveals to Baptista (Bianca's father) that he is not really a school teacher named Cambio. This reveals that not all deception in a relationship has to be directed to the partner in the relationship, but in order to get a relationship to work deception has to be involved. To get this relationship to work they had to deceive the father. This quote shows us that Deception is always involved in a relationship.

In this picture, Alex "Hitch" Hitchens' dream girl (Sara Melas) found out about what he did for a living and up to this point he had never told her exactly what he has done. This is a perfect example of them portraying societies beliefs of deception in a relationship. The reason for this is because as soon as Sara found out about his job their relationship broke down and Sara Melas broke up with Alex.

Conclusion:

In "Hitch" there are many different portrayals of societies beliefs. The main one being deception within a relationship. They how this a lot because the whole movie was deception being made by a man. In the play "Shrew" they also show this belief of society by having Tranio acting like Lucentio just so that Lucentio can get Bianca to marry him. In conclusion both texts portray that in order to get into a good relationship men have to deceive to make a relationship work.
